Confused about deposit limits in Toronto rentals

Hi everyone, I'm looking at a place in Kensington Market and the landlord is asking for the first month's rent plus a $300 key deposit, and a $500 damage deposit upfront. I thought the maximum deposit was one month’s rent. Is this legal? Any advice would be appreciated!
