Concerned about legal basement rentals and safety issues

I'm looking to rent a basement apartment in Toronto, but I’m really worried about safety and legality. How can I verify if the unit has the proper permits and licenses? Also, what are some red flags that might indicate the suite is illegal? Safety is my top priority!
