Concern About Bad Landlord References Affecting My Application

I'm really worried about the rental application process here in Toronto. What if my previous landlord gives a bad reference, or if they don’t respond at all? I want to ensure I present myself well, but I have some anxiety about my past rentals affecting my chances. Any advice?
