Is living close to subway lines worth the extra rent?

I've always wondered if paying a premium to live near a subway line is really worth it. My friend ditched her downtown rental for a place in Scarborough to save cash, but her hour-long commute is a bummer. What do you guys think? Is it better to spend more on rent for convenience?
