Why are so many movers in toronto asking for bank statements

Just started looking for movers in Toronto and I keep seeing listings where the companies want employment letters or bank statements. Is this normal? I'm trying to rent a one-bedroom in downtown but I also need to move my stuff from Markham. Seems like a lot to ask, right?
