Unusual Lease Requirements - Is This Normal?

I'm really confused about a landlord requesting an employment letter or bank statements before renting in Toronto. Seems like a lot to ask, right? Are these sorts of demands typical? I thought it was just a deposit and first month’s rent! What’s going on?
