Who can be a rental reference for my first apartment?

I'm applying for rentals in Toronto, but I’ve never rented before and need references. I keep wondering who can be a reference? Can employers work? What do landlords typically ask for? Any tips on getting a reference letter if I don't have a landlord reference? Feeling a bit lost here!
