Why are last minute movers in toronto adding surprise fuel charges?

I'm getting ready to move from a brand new condo near Yonge and Eglinton, and the movers I booked just hit me with unexpected fuel surcharges and added fees—over $200 more than we agreed! Has anyone else faced this issue on moving day? How can I avoid this in the future?
