Landlord Wants 3 Months Deposit - Is This Legal?

My landlord is asking for three months' rent as a deposit before I can move in. I've never rented before and I thought the standard was usually just one month. Is this normal practice or am I being taken advantage of? Should I be worried or is this typical in pet-friendly rentals?
