What can landlords legally ask for on rental applications?

I’m unsure about what information I have to provide on rental applications. Can a landlord ask for my SIN? Is it legal to request my employment history or references? What are my rights if I feel they’re asking for too much personal information? Feeling overwhelmed, especially with kids to consider.
