How to avoid extra charges with toronto movers for my one bedroom

I’m moving from a low-rise in Leslieville to a basement apartment in the Annex next month, and I’m worried about surprise charges from movers. How do I make sure I’m not hit with unexpected fees? Last time it was an extra $200 for stairs, and I can’t afford that again!
