Red flags when viewing apartments? Just got burned by a sketchy landlord

I just lost my deposit and first month's rent to what I now realize was a scam landlord. The guy seemed legit during the viewing - had keys, knew details about the building, even had what looked like official paperwork. But after I transferred the money, he stopped responding and I found out he wasn't actually the owner. I'm out $3,200 and feeling pretty stupid. What are some red flags I should have caught? How do you verify someone actually owns the property they're renting?
