Are security deposits legal in Ontario rentals?

I'm considering a rental in Toronto and the landlord is asking for a security deposit. I want to know if security deposits are legal in Ontario and what the rules are regarding how much can be charged. Also, how do I ensure the deposit is returned at the end of my lease?
