Navigating Rental Applications as an International Student

I'm feeling a bit lost with the rental application process here in Toronto. I'm unsure about how credit checks work, and what kind of references landlords expect from me. Do I really need an employment letter, or are there other ways to strengthen my application as a student? Any tips would help!
