Toronto movers charging extra after damages anyone else experience this

I just moved into my U of T apartment and my couch got scratched badly during the move. Now, the movers are saying it’s not their fault and won't refund me. Has anyone else dealt with this? How do I navigate getting a resolution without losing my mind over this $700 couch?
