How safe is the Kensington Market area in Toronto?

I'm considering moving to Kensington Market and am concerned about neighborhood safety. I've heard mixed reviews about crime rates in the area. I'd like to know more about actual experiences living there, and any resources to check local crime statistics would be helpful.
