Renewing lease with significant rent increase - options?

My landlord just informed me that my rent will increase by 25% when I renew my lease in December. I've been a tenant here for four years and have never missed a payment. Is this increase legal? What options do I have to negotiate or contest this? Looking for advice on how to proceed.
