This week, reports surfaced that Doug Ford’s government is considering removing rent control in Toronto and possibly across Ontario.
Rent control is the only thing stopping landlords from raising rent by any amount once your lease renews — the current annual cap is 2.5%.
If rent control ends, that limit could vanish. That means someone paying $2,000/month could see $2,800 next year.
Developers might argue this would “increase supply,” but renters know what it really means — higher rents, faster.
Question:
Would you stay in Toronto if rent control ends? Or would you pack up and move to another city?
