Big news for renters in Toronto and across Ontario — the Ford government has officially scrapped its proposal to remove rent control.
Earlier this week, there were reports that the province was exploring ways to weaken tenant protections under the Residential Tenancies Act, including ending “security of tenure” and allowing landlords to raise rents freely.
After major backlash from renters, tenant-rights groups, and media coverage — Doug Ford’s government has now backed down.
What This Means for Renters:
Rent control stays in place across Ontario.
Landlords cannot raise rent beyond the guideline (unless it’s a new building exempt from control).
Month-to-month tenants keep their security — landlords can’t evict without legal grounds.
The idea of “market-based rent” has been dropped for now.
This is a big win for renters, especially in Toronto, where rents have already reached record highs ($2,600+ for a 1-bedroom in 2025). Without rent control, prices would have skyrocketed even further.
