University of Toronto off campus housing

A friend is starting at University of Toronto soon and looking for off-campus housing that’s not crazy expensive. Ideally something close to St. George campus or along the subway line. Anyone got recommendations, hidden gems, or places to avoid? Also curious what the average rent is like right now for a room or small studio.
