Landlord increasing rent mid-lease for property improvements

I'm in a 1-bedroom apartment with a year-long lease, and my landlord just notified me of a rent increase due to building improvements. The increase is significant and I didn't see this clause in my lease. Has anyone faced a similar situation? What are my options?
