Is it common for landlords to ask for employment letters?

I'm currently hunting for a rental in Tootan, and I've run into a landlord who wants either an employment letter or recent bank statements. Is this standard practice in Toronto? I'm worried it might limit my options, especially with the market being so tight right now. Anyone else experienced this?
