Why is Toronto housing so outlandishly expensive?

Seriously, how is it that NYC is cheaper than Toronto? I mean, Vancouver’s prices are high, but Toronto takes the cake! It makes no sense! By what criteria are these price tags justified? What’s driving this housing crisis in the city compared to others in Canada and the US?
