Lost out on another rental—how are people winning these bidding wars?

I just got outbid again! Someone offered $250 over asking for a cute 1-bedroom in the East End. I feel like I'm trapped in a bidding war with no chance of winning. How is everyone affording this? Is this the new normal in Toronto? I could really use some advice or shared experiences!
