Confused about first and last month deposits in Ontario - help!

I'm renting in Toronto for just a few months and I'm unsure about the rules. Can landlords ask for first and last month’s rent? What about damage deposits – are these legal? How do I ensure I get my last month back? What is the maximum they can ask for with deposits in Ontario?
