Why is Toronto Housing So Shockingly Expensive?

I can't believe how overpriced Toronto housing is! Rent for a one-bedroom can be higher than in NYC—even Vancouver looks reasonable by comparison. What justifies these prices? Is it demand, or is it something else entirely? This price difference makes no sense at all!
