Rent taking over my budget – what gives?

Is anyone else feeling the pain of rent consuming 40-60% of income? The 30% rule feels like a cruel joke! I make $60k; can I seriously afford $2400 a month? It feels like I'm just spending way too much on rent with no end in sight. How are others coping with this stress?
