Landlord requests employment letter & bank statements - is this normal?

I'm in a rental situation and my landlord is asking for an employment letter and recent bank statements before renewing my lease. This feels a bit unusual to me. Has anyone experienced this? What’s the norm in these situations? I'm concerned about privacy and my rights.
