Rental Reference Confusion - Who Can Help?

I'm applying for rentals in Toronto and I'm unsure about references. I’ve never rented before, so who can I consider as a reference? Do landlords check with employers, or should I get a reference letter? What do they typically ask? Any advice would be appreciated!
