Confused about Assignment vs Subletting Options

I'm trying to understand the differences between assignment and subletting. Like, when would I want to do one over the other? I'm thinking about getting out of my lease permanently – which method is better? Also, what are the landlord approval requirements for each? I'm worried about scams too!
