Why is Toronto housing so expensive? A comparison shock!

I'm baffled by how overpriced Toronto housing is! I mean, NYC is often considered cheaper, and even Vancouver seems more reasonable by comparison. How can rents be this high in Toronto? For an international student, it makes no sense! Is there any justification for these insane prices?
