How secure are Toronto neighborhoods and homes?

Considering a move to Toronto! How do the neighborhoods fare in terms of security? How prevalent are things like bike theft or break-ins? I'd love to feel at ease venturing out after dark. Any areas you'd recommend for a good sense of safety?
