Worried about special assessments in condos - Need opinions

I've just heard about a special assessment affecting my condo, and I'm worried about how that impacts us renters. Are we expected to cover the extra costs? Could this lead to a rent increase because of the condo fees going up? I'm considering leaving due to the assessment. Any advice?
