Subletting rights question - confused tenant about restrictions

I'm really confused about my rights to sublet my apartment in Toronto. My landlord just denied my request, but I've heard that I have some legal rights to sublet. What exactly can landlords restrict? Also, how do credit checks come into play for rental approvals, especially if I'm using Airbnb?
