Confused about rental references for basement apartment?

I'm applying for a basement apartment in Toronto but I'm unsure about references. Who can be a reference if I've never rented before? Do landlords check with employers or look for past landlord references? What do they usually ask? Any tips on getting reference letters would be appreciated!
