Bidding war madness in Toronto - how much is too much?

I can't believe how crazy this rental market is! Every time I submit an offer, it feels like I'm just shooting in the dark. Losing apartments to higher bids is incredibly frustrating. How do I even know how high to go without breaking the bank? Anyone else struggling with this?
