When’s best to search for a place in Toronto?

I’m looking to move to Toronto and need some advice on timing for leases. Is there an ideal time to start searching for affordable housing? I’m hoping for good transit access to campus, and I’m a bit worried about finding the right roommates to share costs with. Any suggestions?
