Confused About Subletting Rights and Restrictions!

I want to sublet my apartment, but my landlord says I can't. I'm unsure about the rules—aren't tenants allowed to sublet under certain conditions? Also, I heard something about Airbnb restrictions. Can landlords really deny subletting altogether? What are the legal avenues I might have?
