Question about Last Month's Rent and Deposits

I'm really worried about the practice of asking for last month's rent as a deposit. I've heard stories of landlords unfairly keeping deposits for minor damages. Can anyone share their experiences with getting deposits returned? I don't want to lose my hard-earned money!
