Subletting Rights Confusion - Can My Landlord Deny My Sublet?

I've been a renter in Toronto for years and I'm puzzled. My landlord is denying my request to sublet my apartment while I’m away, but I thought that was allowed? What exactly can they restrict? And how does Airbnb fit into all this? I’m just trying to figure it all out!
