Is it normal to pay for damages that aren't mine?

I just signed a lease and found a clause stating I could be charged for any damage even if I wasn't the one responsible. Like, how does that work? If it wasn't me, why should I have to pay? Is this a common thing, or is my landlord just trying to pull a fast one?
