Why are rental applications so exhausting?

I can't believe the hoops I have to jump through just to rent a place in Toronto. They want my whole life story plus credit checks, references, and employment letters. What’s with all the competition? Feels like I’m applying for a job instead of a place to live. Anyone else feel this pain?
