Experiencing high hydro bills - anyone else?

I've recently moved into a short-term rental in Toronto, and I'm shocked by the hydro costs. Even though I've been careful with my usage, the bills seem unusually high. Is this common? Do short-term rentals typically have high energy costs because of inefficient systems?
