Everyone says you can't negotiate rent in Toronto's crazy market, but I'm wondering if that's actually true. My lease is up for renewal and they want to raise it from $2400 to $2650 (building built in 2019, so no rent control).
I've been a perfect tenant for 2 years - always pay on time, no complaints, even helped show units to prospective tenants. The unit below me has been empty for 3 months so maybe they'd rather keep me than risk vacancy?
**Has anyone successfully negotiated rent in Toronto recently?** What worked?
Some strategies I've heard:
- Offer longer lease term for lower monthly rate
- Point out unit maintenance issues that need addressing
- Show comparable listings at lower prices
- Emphasize your track record as a tenant
Or am I just dreaming and should accept the increase? The apartment hunt was so brutal last time, really don't want to move if I can avoid it.
Share your negotiation wins (or fails) - let's learn from each other!
