Questioning Legality of Various Deposits

My landlord is asking for a pet deposit, a damage deposit, and a key deposit. Are these even legal? I thought only a last month's rent deposit was allowed. Why are they asking for additional charges? Shouldn't advertised rent cover everything, including taxes? Anyone experienced this?
