Do I really need renters insurance for my new place in Kensington Market?

Hey everyone, I just signed a lease for a small apartment in Kensington Market, and my landlord is insisting I get renters insurance. Is it mandatory in Toronto? Also, how much should I expect to pay for coverage? Trying to budget before moving in next month!
