Concerns About Landlord References for My Rental Application

I'm really anxious about the landlord reference section of my application. I've had some issues with previous landlords that might show up as bad references. What can I do if I’m nervous they’ll negatively affect my chances of securing this rental? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
