How's the Soudan Ave area for rentals? Transit options?

I’m thinking about moving to the Soudan Ave area in Toronto. I need a place that's affordable and has good transit access to campus. I’m also a bit worried about roommate compatibility and shared costs. How’s the vibe around there? Is it safe? Any feedback would be appreciated!
