Subletting rights question - confused tenant

Hi everyone, I’m in a bit of a bind. My landlord just denied my request to sublet, but I thought that was allowed? What are the legal subletting rights in Toronto? Also, are there any restrictions for short-term rentals like Airbnb? Can they really stop me from finding a compatible roommate? Help!
