Need advice on rental applications in Toronto

I'm really nervous about my upcoming apartment hunt, especially in neighborhoods like Leslieville or the Junction. What are landlords usually looking for in an application? Do I need to have a guarantor, and how do credit checks work? Any tips for a first-time renter would be greatly appreciated!
